Collect signals → classify the underlying audience problem → score relevance and transferability → choose an angle you can add → move the qualified idea into production.
1. Start with your audience problem, not a platform feed
Write down the recurring questions, objections and desired outcomes your content should address. A trending post is useful only when it intersects with one of those jobs. Otherwise you are borrowing attention from a topic your audience may not care about.
2. Collect multiple signals
Look for repeated patterns across creators, search suggestions, platform discovery surfaces, comments and recent posts. One outlier is weak evidence. Repetition across independent sources is more useful because it suggests the underlying question—not just one execution—has momentum.
3. Separate the idea from the execution
Strip a successful post down to its underlying problem, promise, mechanism, format and proof. “This exact hook went viral” is less reusable than “people are responding to a concrete before/after demonstration of this recurring problem.”
4. Score transferability
| Question | Keep the idea when… |
|---|---|
| Audience fit | The underlying problem is already relevant to people you serve. |
| Authority fit | You can add useful reasoning, evidence or experience instead of paraphrasing. |
| Format fit | The format is realistic for your production process. |
| Freshness | The idea still matters by the time you can publish it. |
| Commercial fit | If a product is mentioned, it follows naturally from the problem rather than being bolted on. |
5. Create an originality brief
Before using AI, write the angle you are changing: audience, evidence, example, opinion, sequence, format or conclusion. That brief is a guardrail against producing a cosmetic rewrite of somebody else's work.
6. Move the idea into a production system
Once qualified, the idea becomes an input to the research-to-script workflow or the broader AI content workflow. Do not continue collecting “inspiration” after the decision is made.
Where tools help
Discovery software can reduce search time and surface candidate material. It cannot decide whether a trend is strategically relevant or whether your transformation adds enough original value. That judgment remains part of the editorial workflow.
